Although female gentian mutilation (FGM) was banned by the United Nations in 2012, Nigeria still has the highest cases of FGM. In fact, they account for about a quarter of women worldwide who have undergone this procedure. To completely end FGM, it starts with a change in us, our character, our attitudes, and our morals. Nigeria’s bright future begins with their people and president continuing to fight to serve and protect women’s rights. Women do make up over 50% of the world’s population so we must protect them at all costs.
“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.” -Martin Luther King Jr.
